Occupational Health and Safety under OHSAS 18001 international standard
The international operating experience of KATOEN NATIE and the evaluation of potential risks by our consultants and company personnel, gave us a complete assessment of the potential occupational hazards within the Terminal.
Katoen Natie Terminal TCP is constantly evaluating risks and identifying potential hazards to determine the application of the necessary measures through its Risk Management Program and associated procedures. These procedures include routine and non-routine activities, subcontractor activities, visitors, etc., as well as the safety equipment needed in each situation.
Katoen Natie Terminal TCP encourages proactive Risk Management planning and the implementation of corrective measures, focusing on the elimination of risks when possible, or otherwise reducing the probability of accidents or the potential seriousness of the results.
The company has invested considerable amounts in infrastructure (technical department, restrooms, showers, locker rooms and eating areas), and supplies our personnel with high quality safety elements according to the task they perform (uniforms with reflective tape, safety helmets with ear protection, lumbar support girdles, masks for respiratory protection, etc.)
At Katoen Natie Terminal TCP the concepts of occupational health and safety have been integrated to procedures and safety manuals, to ensure the efficient application of control and preventive measures, compliance with company policies and objectives in occupational health and safety, as well as with legal requirements and regulations. Our training program in occupational health and safety helps us establish a safety culture in which our employees themselves help promote proper safety procedures on the job. This is unprecedented in port activities in our country.
Concerned about occupational health, Katoen Natie Terminal TCP requires and coordinates medical check-ups for all our employees, audiometric tests for those who are exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB, and psychotechnical tests for crane, straddle carrier and svetruck operators.
In order to obtain objective evidence that our terminal complies with international standards, implements improvement measures, and systematically evaluates the system’s performance, audits are carried out regularly.
TCP regularly measures and follows up performance in occupational health and safety through the following procedures:
• Qualitative and quantitative indicators
• Follow up of compliance with SYSO objectives.
• Proactive measures (regular inspections, measuring noise levels, monitoring organic vapors).
• Reactive performance indicators (accident and incident statistics).
• The information obtained from these procedures is used to determine preventive and corrective measures.
For emergencies, the safety of the container terminal is based mainly on two interdependent elements: an efficient combination of structural protective methods and our internal organization.
The best accident is the one that never happened, and to prevent it our internal Safety Brigade has implemented the terminal’s Contingency Plans.
The Contingency Plans include Emergency Drills with active participation of the Safety Brigade and general evacuation drills. These drills are carried out under the supervision of the corresponding authorities (National Port Authority, Coast Guard and Fire Department). Our plans are constantly being improved. With the support and help of our employees, we are generating a Safety Culture in our work environment. Our company motto is: OUR PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.
