ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED
1 - IMO container washing facility
2 - Maintenance building
3 - Contention of spills
4 - Classification and disposal of waste material
5 - Warehouse for paints and thinners
6, 7, 8 - Reduce paper consumption
9 - Reduce battery consumption
10 - Machine washing facility and wastewater treatment plant
11 - Implant use of 100% recycled paper
12 - Platforms to contain spills
13 - Measures to prevent dengue fever
14 - Reduce energy consumption
1 - IMO washing facility
OBJECTIVE: To have the first officially authorized IMO washing facility in the country.
STATUS: Completed
2 - Maintenance building
OBJECTIVE: To have the necessary infrastructure and tools for maintenance of machinery according to the company’s safety policies.
This project includes office space, dressing room, shower room, restrooms, kitchen and eating area in a closed building with adequate ventilation and lighting, and an under roof area to park two 12-meter-high straddle carriers, which can be washed, or safely checked and repaired in this facility featuring catwalks, hoisting devices, etc. The building’s drainage system takes effluents directly to the wastewater treatment plant.
STATUS: Completed
3 - Contention of hazardous material spills
OBJECTIVE: To have the infrastructure and trained personnel to control hazardous material spills to mitigate environmental impact.
This plan is all-inclusive, from the purchase of the elements for spill control and contention, to the training of the personnel involved in contingency control.
STATUS: With the help and support of the National Fire Department, TCP selected and trained enough people to form a Contingency Brigade (Level III). We also purchased the necessary equipment for the contention of hazardous material spills.

4 - Classification and disposal of waste
OBJECTIVE:To classify and efficiently dispose of waste material in order to minimize impact on the environment.
This plan contemplates the definition of a system to classify waste, as well as agreements with different companies who can recycle or guarantee final disposal in agreement with legal and environmental requirements.
STATUS: Completed
Katoen Natie Terminal TCP is implementing an environmental system in line with the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, always trying to use the recycling programs to contribute with projects pursuing social benefits. Through the Repapel project, Terminal Cuenca del Plata supports "La Escuelita", a child care center managed by INAU, located in our vicinity. The paper and cardboard classified by TCP is picked up by Repapel, and channeled through different factories and warehouses, to be finally used for the production of toilet paper and notebooks for this child care center.

Oil
Controlled destruction according to legal regulations
Plastics, metals, tires
They are delivered to authorized recycling companies
Batteries
Complying with legal regulations, batteries are segregated and delivered to the importer for safe disposal.
Toner
Empty cartridges are donated to the Foundation for all the children; they use the income to finance educational programs.
Electrical materials and scraps
They are delivered to authorized recycling companies
5 - Warehouse for paints and thinners
OBJECTIVE: To have an enclosed storage facility for paints and thinners used in the container maintenance and repair department.
This plan destines a specific space to be used exclusively as a warehouse for paints and thinners. We adapted a container for this purpose, remodeled to provide adequate ventilation for our people.
STATUS: Completed
6, 7, 8 - Reduce paper consumption in all departments of the company
OBJECTIVE: To reduce the use of paper in the different departments.
This plan includes the restructure of some activities to reduce the use of paper, and also a switch to recycled paper.
STATUS: Completed
9 - Reduce battery consumption
OBJECTIVE: To reduce the use of batteries in the terminal.
This plan proposes a switch from common batteries to rechargeable batteries.
STATUS: Completed
It is interesting to mention the fact that our personnel bring disposable batteries from their homes to the terminal for adequate disposal.
10 - Machine washing facility and wastewater treatment plant
OBJECTIVE: To have the adequate facilities and procedures for the treatment of waste waters.
STATUS: Completed
TCP has adequate facilities to wash the machinery and also a waste water treatment plant. Every month samples are taken from the last tank, before the waters are dumped to the internal collector, in order to make sure that the effluents comply with current regulations.
11 - Using 100% recycled paper
OBJECTIVE:To use recycled paper.
STATUS: Implementation stage
Under the slogan “Paper: one package = one notebook”, TCP has promised to donate 100 notebooks made of recycled paper per month. These notebooks will be distributed in public elementary schools in the city of Montevideo participating in the Repapel environmental project. This is another way to support recycling and to care for the environment, contributing to reduce tree cutting, and decreasing water and energy consumption. In 1 kilo of waste generated by the residents of Montevideo, there is an average of 100 grams of paper and cardboard; in other words, 10% of what every person throws away can be recycled and turned into usable paper.
12 - Platforms to contain spills of hazardous materials
OBJECTIVE: Spill control.
This plan is designed to control spills in the terminal. We purchased platforms and absorbing materials to contain spills. Leaking containers are placed on top of the platforms so that the spill is contained.
STATUS: Completed
13 - Measures against dengue fever
OBJECTIVE: to minimize the risk of contracting dengue fever within the terminal.
Uruguay has already had some confirmed cases of dengue fever. This virus is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. When the government implemented fumigation of public areas, we also fumigated the whole area of the terminal. Drains are cleaned and checked regularly for mosquito larvae.
STATUS: Completed
14 - Reduce energy consumption
OBJECTIVE: To reduce energy consumption in all departments.
The lighting system of the terminal operates in two modes: lights during ship operation and lights when there is no activity. When there are no ships in operation, only some of the lights are turned on, enough to ensure terminal security and safety.
STATUS: Completed
